DON HILL DIES

Don Hill, the owner of the Don Hill's club
that I shot my TV show in for years,
has died.
Don was always a generous host and was especially
friendly toward our show, allowing us full run of the place,
including the off-limits basement,
to shoot whatever we wanted with whomever we wanted.
Many people tell similar stories about the man,
he was one of the few who really cared about the music
and the music scene in NYC,
and there are a number of bands who got to tour
Europe and Asia who would never have gotten where they got
if it hadn't been for Don Hill giving them a place
to get their first fan following.

We shot our movie,
"Punk Rock Zombie Kung Fu Catfight"

at Don Hill's featuring amazing musical performances by
PEELANDER Z, SEX SLAVES, BEX SCHWARTZ and others.
If you look closely, you can even SEE Don in the movie once briefly,
as either Bex or Kitty Kowalski walks past him (I forget which).
I've been there shooting on nights when celebrities like
Joan Jett or Debbie Harry were in the audience.
One night, Gene Simmons came during an all-female rockers night
and hit on every single woman on my show in one evening!

Tim Beckley, who told me he'd always lose his phone and credit card at Don Hill's,
but Don would keep it safe for him every time in the office,

Everyone's been talking about the "supermoon" lately,
and only a normal person would regard it as a coincidence
that at the same time the moon went big,

The Moon is a Disco Ball
finally started to get recognized in their local Florida press!
The Orlando Weekly's music section admits finally that
it's been attending every one of
The Moon is a Disco Ball's
recent events at Uncle Lou's Entertainment Hall in Orlando!
And the Weekly has this to say about Lucy and Bethany:

"(T)heir fantastical ideas (storylines, costumes, props)
and cartoonishly girly spirit
is what makes these nights interesting and fun,
transforming the dive bar into a kind of screwball playhouse.And ... two things the Moon ladies do on an expert level is
hula hoop and bake.
The first feat is self-explanatory.
But the second hits home when you consider that they're both grads of
Le Cordon Bleu culinary college.
So, yeah, they may be wearing fluorescent wigs and nutty outfits but
they fucking slay it on desserts,
which they make themselves to sell at shows.
I mean, c'mon, PB&J bites!
They even featured a savory item:
a knockout amuse-bouche of
bacon-wrapped haricot verts.Oh yeahhh.

If this oddball confluence sounds like a little adventure,it is.
And these shows are free,
leaving you plenty of cash to try their legit baked goods.
Still remaining in this series are the "Folk Adventure" (Mar. 22-TOMORROW)
and "Enchanted Fairytale Forest"  (Mar. 29) editions"

Good review, right?
Of course they get good reviews, they're my discoveries! haha
I'm very proud to work with Lucy and Bethany,
they're the real thing and are exciting to know
but never dramatic to know (my highest compliment).

many years from now.

Her performances have been a part of the Seattle Sketchfest, NYC Underground Comedy Festival, Philly Sketchfest, North Carolina Comedy ArtsFestival, and more! Her fears are losing her memory and owls.

I had asked my conspiracy theorist internet radio celebrity friend
Frank Nora to please let Ashley Mitchell
and me upload our new Tony Clifton girl

and he kindly allowed us to.
I had thought that the guys there were hardcore fans of various things, so
if any of them liked what we were doing, we might have a longterm fan
and possible friend. It was innocently intended on my part.
But check out the heated initial reaction:

Neal, our next podcast will be less than TWO minutes ling!

The reaction was so much more awesome than I had anticipated!
They knew this was a character, well maybe Eddie couldn't comprehend that, but
the other two must have--
yet still responded to "her" as though she were the bad guy wrestler!

The last time I did Tony Clifton girls, I had one girl in Australia and another in Ireland
performing the characters and we put it anonymously in front of a teenage audience and younger--
they responded to the characters angrily as though they were real people.
This time, Ashley and I have put clear credits on the audio and released it
to an audience of middle-aged (mostly) right wing male conspiracy theorists,
and they STILL responded in a style Pavlov and Andy Kaufman would have enjoyed.

It's been so long since I've done anything with balls, I forgot about the haters, haha.
It reminds me of the old days with Lisa-- she was the most hated girl on YouTube back then, haha.
You don't realize people are paying attention until you start to get haters.

I used to know this girl who pointed out to me that
half the people who have heard of Madonna HATE Madonna.
If people are pissed at you, it means you've gotten under their skin in some way.
I personally loathe Lady Gaga and have never heard any of her music, but I know this means
she must be successful for me to abhor the notion of her.
So obviously if these guys are threatened by Alicia, that means Ashley and I are on the right track.
Wait till they hear next week's podcast, which is about how Alicia enjoys being molested
in public by security at airports!
Or wait till the cartoon comes out about the two girls going to China
and doing bad Jerry Lewis Chinese people imitations in the faces of the locals!

Basically, the idea should offend every stupid American if we do it right,
but it should make some smarter Americans laugh, as well as
many Europeans and Asians and Africans and South Americans and umm.. Eskimos.

I hope Frank doesn't kick us off the onsug.com site but on the other hand...
that would be sort of bad-ass!!!

PHANTOM Moon is a Disco Ball/Rampler Interview!
The Moon is a Disco Ball were supposed to come to New York, play a gig in Brooklyn,
then interview/be interviewed by The Rampler a/k/a Frank Edward Nora a/k/a "Andy Kaufman"'s Favorite Podcaster, on our TV show and his
internet radio show simultaneously. But the Moon girls
got into a car accident down south in North Carolina
(nobody was hurt but the car was totalled)
and never made it to NYC at all this time.
However, you can't expect a small thing like reality to slow down an internet
radio talk show host!
He went to the agreed-upon meeting place at 2:09 pm ANYWAY to do a phantom interview!
No, I'm not kidding, here is the message Frank sent to me and Lucy:

"I went over to Katherine Hepburn Garden at the time we would
have met, and tried to see if I could sense all of us there in the alternate
timeline - and I really do think I felt the presence of the other us. It was
very interesting. I recorded it all of course and it will be on episode 1613..."

“CALL US COWBOYS” Live Theater Review

Ashley Mitchell is an extremely unique actress/writer/director who is so good at performing comedy that she took a supporting role I gave her and turned it into a starring role without changing a word of dialogue. I've become convinced while animating her voice work that she is one of the finest comedy actors I've ever heard or seen. There's no way that what I wrote was half as funny as what she read! This woman, I thought, is born to do comedy and will be making people laugh their asses off for many years to come.

Last night was the first time I ever saw Ashley perform drama, in the play “Call Us Cowboys,” at Roy Arias Theater, and I'm at a loss to put into words how blown away I was by her moving performance. Anything I write down just seems like I'm kissing ass and you won't believe me because I work with her, but I don't work with her doing drama. I have no reason to encourage her to do that!!! I need her to do my funny cartoons! Also, I've worked with some decent actors over the years, I think, going back to CHUD when I was a kid, haha (Daniel Stern, John Heard). Ashley can do things I've never seen an actor be able to do before. I don't just mean laugh on cue or cry on cue with real tears (which she does painfully convincingly), but this girl was commanding the attention of the audience sometimes even when she turned her back to us. I don't only think that she would stand out in small theater productions like this one, I think she would stand out even among the most accomplished of performers. This girl is in her early 20s and after the show I saw actors older than her asking her to go into teaching. But although Ashley's techniques are clearly well thought out, and she could probably make any actor better, there would be no way to teach someone how to be as good as Ashley Mitchell.

See? I told you, it sounds like I'm kissing butt. This is one of my problems with live plays-- there's no evidence left after the performance, it's disappeared already into the ether. If it were a youtube video, I could PROVE my points by linking you to it, but because it was live, you only have word of mouth to go on. Live theater is so ephemeral. If you can check this play out tonight or tomorrow afternoon, you'll be able to see for yourself what I'm saying, but if you miss those shows, you'll never know what you missed.

The play itself is intense and sad, about the effects of war on people's lives. There are flashback scenes of Viet Nam and Iraq, and Aki Tsuchimoto stood out most in those scenes with her quirky and interesting performance as a Viet Namese artist who gets close to the wrong Yankee. But the play comes alive in the scenes of domestic quarreling between Ashley's character Wanda and her husband Frank, played by Kevin Ploth. At points I felt like I had been trapped at my parent's house after Thanksgiving, so genuine was the writing and the performance of domestic bliss turned to an ongoing and worsening, inescapable Hell.

I thought the ending, without getting into details, was a bit “deux ex machina” as written but the remarkable way Ashley chose to perform the scene was the main topic of conversation among the audience after the show, from what I could overhear. I don't want to give spoilers concerning the plot details, but let's just say that Ms. Mitchell managed to do things not written in the script and not using words at all (!) to completely sell the ending of the play and make it seem entirely emotionally satisfying and believable. She'll make the hairs on your arm stand on end and you will know you have witnessed something very special.

Although the play was well-written and all the actors did their jobs, my thought leaving there was, “I bet I could even give Ashley ten pages of gibberish to act out but by the end of it, she'd have the audience crying or laughing or feeling whatever she wanted them to feel.” She's just out of school and has no representation yet-- a situation not likely to last all that much longer. The idea that her skills are likely to improve with time is nearly frightening.

I'll tell you now the same thing I told her after the show: Ashley Mitchell has acting super powers.

In tonight's episode of the 209 Show, Tohm Lev (above) tells me about how she was on television in Israel, working for the army as an interviewer. She said the experience made her realize she wanted to create her own art instead of just helping other people spread the word about theirs. Whether that's true or whether that's what Israeli intelligence told her to say to American leftist artists, I can identify with the notion, and I think it explains a lot about where I'm at and where I'm interested in going next. I don't think I'd ever want to stop doing interviews but I think the reasons I want to do them are vastly different from earlier on. It's partially me working out new theories but partially me moving out of theorizing altogether and moving toward open-ended exploration instead. I'd explain more but you're already bored and you should be able to see for yourself what I mean in time.

The last place I lived, I had a bunch of rotating female roommates. They told me I couldn't have a cat because they were allergic to pet fur. When they got a dog, I knew it was long past time for me to move out.
      The dog would cling to me for some reason. This weirded them out as much as it did me, but it was a nice little dog, some sort of beagle with super-short legs. It would push against my door and try to come in my room with me. It would throw itself forcefully against my legs when they would clip clop over in their high heels to stop it from “bothering” me. When they'd pick it up to carry it away, it would whimper and whine in misery.
     They also had two small green chattering parrots, the kind that can't learn to speak. That didn't stop the loudest woman there from trying to teach them to talk anyway all afternoon long, day after day. The birds hated everyone except one of the women and me. And the grandmother, but everyone liked her. One time she mentioned that the birds are quiet when I stand next to them, they stop chattering.
     The birds figured out I was moving before the humans did. I could tell this by their change in behavior toward me. I shared one last banana with them, then in the middle, went distractedly back into my room when my mind wandered. The parrots erupted into SCREAMING so I went back out and finished my banana standing by them. They didn't want any more banana, they just wanted some final eye contact with another sentient being.

It's bad for me to be around people who like to be abused because either they disrespect me for not abusing them, or I become abusive toward them and betray myself in the process. I think it's important that I be the “craziest” one in any scenario from this point forward (because I'm not actually very crazy after all). I've helped enough unstable people for three lifetimes, now I want to be associated with those more together than I am, so that I can go back to doing better work.

Everybody is doing the best they can. It's just that some people's biological imperative is to be con artists, strippers, escort girls, liars, and saboteurs. If there weren't a need in nature for such types, they would not exist. Everybody's playing the role they were cast in. Being angry at someone for stabbing you in the back makes as much sense as being mad at a bear for mauling you. Everyone is just following their nature.

Jason in my mind holds the reigning title of "Greatest Living Songwriter."
And he's just as good without his glasses as with them, haha.
But this night belonged to Tohm Lev.

In Tohm's moving set, she performed a song about how someone you used to be so close to after a few years is like a total stranger, she performed a song about two people having entirely different views of the same relationship, she performed a song about being in love with someone who loves trivial things more than they love you, and she performed an incredible piece on piano about a couple who fought so much that finally they had to stop speaking entirely.That one is called, "No Words" and by far it was the standout performance of Tohm's part of the show. Sitting, playing piano and singing, Tohm commanded the attention, imagination and emotions of the audience in a way a full band never could. It was during this song that you could feel the Tohm Lev of the near future, who I think is about to become somebody.

If Tohm does become a star, it couldn't be happening to a nicer or harder-working person.

Lisa on TV in Ireland This Morning AGAIN!

It was the windiest of days, it was the flounciest of skirts.

The announcer calls Lisa a "very brave model" in this segment, andeven with the still photo above, you can already see why.

This is a scene from Lisa Peters on Irish national television this morning on the Ireland AM show, where she has become a semi-regular model lately. The reason for THAT should also be obvious.

Here she is in a "more conservative" outfit.

Lisa actually forgot this outfit and told me, "I had to run around the studio back to the dresser in these massive heels. You could hear me from a mile away! Quite funny. Anyway apart from that it ran smoothly. Lucky it wasn't live on air!"

It's very exciting to me that good things are finally happening for Lisa.
I've had faith in her, lost the faith, regained it so many times I could write three feature-length screenplays about this woman. She's justified my belief in her and I could not possibly be prouder of any person in my life than I am of 209 Show co-creator Lisa Peters.

So the Del Close
Marathon is 72 hours of improv straight (with a 30 minute cleaning
break every few hours or so, over 150 shows for the weekend) mostly at the UCB
Theatre although they also rented other stages nearby. It started
Friday at 4pm with the UCB Press Conference (Matt Besser, Matt Walsh
and Ian Roberts) and the big news they shared was that they
have a new space opening called UCB EAST! It's a 150
seat theater (a bit smaller than the current UCB). They are planning to open
the new theatre in late 2011... It's going to be at 3rd and Avenue A.
The current UCB Theatre
will continue to operate as its main stage for improv and of course ASSSCAT.
They said, "[UCB East is] going to have all different kinds of comedy.
The same way this will be heavily improv, that will be heavily standup. You
will be able to do things that you can't do in a club in the Midwest."
And this place will also be fully equipped with a bar.
I wasn't there for all
72 hours but I was there every day videotaping most of the live shows. There
were definitely dedicated fans. The Theatre was constantly packed no matter
what time of day it was. One of the final shows on Sunday was Walsh and Roberts
making grilled cheese sandwiches for the audience because they knew everyone
was hungry.
It was definitely fun
and I got to see most of my LA UCB friends again.

Lisa's feet are reasonably priced! Oh wait that's Euros, not dollars. Actually, that's still not so bad. But do you want to wear heels to an outdoor music fest? I guess if you're professionally glamorous like our Lisa then you do.

This is a girl who does not need to smoke weed to be as happy as a stoner. When you see her dressed in her normal "diva casual" style, you don't notice it as much, but put plaid on her and she looks like she just got done smoking in the basement on "That 70's Show!" Lisa, you know I mean that as a compliment!

Lisa's going to the Miss Universe Ireland pageant tonight to cheer on her new friends. She's very excited and spending the day today shopping and doing her hair. Have fun tonight, Lisa. Everyone in NYC loves you and is rooting you on. You represent Ireland when you're in America but you also represent us in NYC when you're in Ireland. We're very proud of you, so keep up the good work.

P.S. I find it interesting that Irish TV seems to still be old format, not widescreen like US TV has become. I prefer the oldschool aspect ratio, myself. Widescreen works better for epic adventures than it does for TV or YouTube.

I'm doing 3D shaded backgrounds and 2D unshaded character animation.
I had wanted to do full-on dance videos but Angel thinks it's funnier if we do a direct spoof of all the girls who sit in their dark bedrooms singing the latest pop hits. It's a high-concept kind of a thing, haha.
I'd like it to be a series but we'll see how the first one comes out and Angel and I will decide then I guess.
I already have a handful of other songs written for the character and a number of ideas for the cartoons.
We'll see how it goes I guess.

Lucy DeLeche made a very forward proposition to an obviously shocked Angel Yau
(above)!

This led to an onstage fight between Lucy and Noel which could only be resolved
by making the confused Angel (above)sit on stage though a song,
not knowing what to do with the tambourine she was given.
I might make a YouTube video out of the dramatic love triangle
if I can figure out how to edit it down from the 4 cameras.

Angel also performed her "audition" routine, which is sort of ironic
because she just texted me from an audition for some kind of NBC comedy thing.
She asked me what she should do, she only has a minute in front of them.
I asked her if she had a bucket to puke in.
Sadly, she did not. But they would have loved that!

came in 2nd runner-up in the Miss Hotspots beauty
pageant in Ireland.
It's a fairly big deal over there. See below, this is Lisa in yesterday's Sunday
paper in Dublin:

Last night Lisa and the first runner-up (her new buddy) got let in for free
and put in the VIP room at a Leona Lewis party.
I think Lisa's mad at me today because last night instead of just congratulating
her, I was lecturing her
about how to extend this into longer-lasting fame. Every time in my life I was
in the VIP rooms, I never cared.
And that's why I'm typing this myself instead of having my hot secretary do
it, you know?
I was totally in Professor Bernard mode, I can become very didactic, but I want
to see Lisa succeed
more than I want to be liked or be popular.
Lucy DeLeche says that when Lisa doesn't understand me, it's because
she's probably expecting me to behave like a normal guy, haha.
That's a good way to put it.

Uh-oh, NOW I've done it! Lisa's leaving.

Lisa was just writing to me online from the beauty parlor, giving me a verbal preview of what is to come. Apparently her hair is now the hair of a superstar or superhero, from the way she described it. All of us in the States have to just wait though to see it. I'm incredibly jealous of everyone in Dublin right now. If you love Lisa Peters and you're in Dublin, go to Lillie's Bordello (a classy place even with that name, haha) tomorrow (Thursday) night for the MIss Hotspots competition. Apparently there will be TV celebrities there (famous in Ireland at least) and it should be a really big deal.

LISA in MISS UNIVERSE PAGEANT?

209 Show co-creator Lisa Peters is NOT going to be
coming to perform at the 209 Show Live events, but she has a good excuse:
Lisa is in Ireland getting ready for the MISS HOTSPOTS.ie
BEAUTY PAGEANT being held THIS THURSDAY in Dublin!
The winner of this contest is automatically entered in the Miss Universe Ireland
pageant, so obviously we're all very excited for Lisa and I'm very proud of her.
She's been working mostly in modelling and acting lately (below).

A friend of mine commented that Lisa's beauty surpasses these contests,
and that he didn't even need to look at the other contestants to know who he
felt was the winner.
I told Lisa this, and while she accepted the compliment graciously,
she said she wanted to be known more for her music than her looks.
I asked her if I should mention she's a singer or musician on the website?
She said, "No, let it be a surprise when they find out!"
I asked, "So then you want me to just say you're beautiful?"
And she said, "Yeah, defo!"

WHO IS ANGEL YAU?

I first encountered Angel back a few years ago when I had been told by two different TV people that they might want to use my cartoons if I had teenagers in the cast or college students in the cast.
I went searching on not Facebook, not Myspace, but FRIENDSTER (yeah it was that long ago)
and found her by searching for college students who wanted to act or do comedy.
I talked her into playing a voice of a character and a promo thingie got made
for one network.
We would email alot and she asked me what I thought of different comedy scenes
in NYC. I told her about this one toxic comedy scene which locked people in and killed their careers, and I also told her about the UCB scene.
I told her that the UCB scene would get her hired and get her work and a chance
to be known,while the other scene would get her laid and people would write books about having sex with her.
The next thing I knew, Angel was in Los Angeles studying with the UCB and getting
bit parts in TV shows and movie trailers with Sandra Bullock.
We kept in touch and when she was in New York,
Angel would always come on my show.
Fast-forward a bit and I found myself working with a crazy girl from the
aforementioned toxic comedy scene.
She spent a week quitting my show, then apologizing, then quitting again, then
calling me from in front of clubs she was performing at to cry that I was
just like her ex-boyfriend and that I was going to hypnotize her and abuse her.
(I was NOT dating this girl, and she lived with her bf!!!!!!!)
I accepted one of her many resignations and was really
completely and totally ready to never do another public access
television episode ever again with ANYbody.
I sent out a mailer to a limited list at 6 am on a Saturday,
announcing that if anyone on that short list wanted to host the show,
they should contact me before noon that day, a 6-hour time window.
I also think I cursed and was rude in the letter because I honestly
didn't want anyone to take the gig, but I didn't want them saying later
that I hadn't offered them the chance.
In my mind, the show was canceled and I could go back to a real life.
Anyway, Angel wrote back at 9:30 am, which was 6:30 am in Los Angeles,
asking if she could host the show.
When I first met Angel, she was really shy.
I was so proud of her for wanting the gig even though I was
acting grouchy, my heart melted.
I loved the idea of doing the show with Angel-- not just because she's Angel,
but also
because she's someone from the UCB system.
I had worked with the originals in the first season of my show, in 1996,
so I figured, okay, but Angel will be the LAST hostess.
This way I started in the first year with the UCB and I end it with a modern
UCB student.
Angel's humor is mostly quiet, but if you follow along,
then she often surprises you in very unladylike ways!

Angel is also a really good person-- she probably gives me more advice than
I give her.

and that I CAN have NICE people in my life.

Well, you'll have to take our word for it, but that hand points to Lisa Peters, beauty queen, involved in an elaborate PUBLIC PRANK DANCE FLASH MOB in Dublin, Ireland just the other day. For some reason only one person videotaped it, and he neither concentrated on getting good shots of all the dancers nor on getting many good crowd reactions. It's a shame the event wasn't documented better, since the girls obviously put so much effort into their rehearsals.
This is the side of Lisa that usually only comes out after midnight-- the
elaborate, fully thought-out prankster side. She'll invest days and days setting you up and you'll be living in a false reality of her creating for however long she wants it. She's got the most surreal sense of humor and perspective on reality that I've witnessed, and she never fails to surprise me. She's the silliest person on the planet and then she'll send me an mp3 of her new secret song and it's so powerful and sad that it's almost painful to listen to. Her prankster attitude had me convinced for a long time that someone else was really writing her songs!!
I hope she gets back to releasing her music to the public, it's surreal in a BAD way to keep her music hidden.
Anyway, this info is for people who think Lisa is just a pretty girl.
ALTHOUGH, uhhh... she IS out on a modelling shoot as I write this!

early 80s,which means he has no sense of humor.

You can just imagine Lisa and me throwing stuff at each other and hiring lots

of lawyers,then you'll get the picture.

I spent all day Saturday volunterring for Horus Cat's human
mom, CAROL from FOOD NETWORK
at her yearly kids event, the TOUCH A TRUCK FESTIVAL.
Above you can see AUDRA ROX performing,they are a band of
adults who perform for kids.
Carol informs me this is a whole sub-culture or industry
unto itself, the bands for kids thing. It was a fun day and I got to eat pizza which normally I wouldn't eat any longer. I worked the sand art table for the second year in a row and earned the nickname, "The Sandman," which I think is the most ominous-sounding nickname I've ever had applied to me. To my face, at least!!! haha

Sad News: Angel Yau, star of the 209 Show, has died in a tragic mountain-climbing accident. My condolences to her family and friends. More importantly, I need a new hostess for my show! Does anyone know any other cute Asian comediennes? And don't suggest Margaret Cho, I already contacted her and she said no.

I decided to throw out all previous scripts and design all the scenes so they would look the coolest.

I'm going to write the new dialogue AFTER I've done much of the animation, THEN record the actors,
THEN do the dialogue animation. It's an experiment, obviously. I think it might allow a more
personal vision and allow greater creativity for the filmmaker.

Quite frankly, I'm SICK of having to write LIES week after week about how "NICE" this Angel Yau

girl is. The REAL TRUTH is that she is a terror to work with--

badass criminal I've ever worked with-- and I've worked with Jason Trachtenburg-- okay??

My close friends keep asking me why I'm even friends with her.

Anyone who crosses this woman ends up swimming with the daisies and pushing up fishes.
It's reached the point where she can't even PRETEND to be nice in her newest "comedy" videos.
FINALLY the rest of you can begin to understand the Hell I've been forced to endure for YEARS now,
working with this brutal and cruel martinet.
Ever since she got hired by the UCB, she thinks she's better than everyone and
she NEVER stops complaining.
